After forty rounds the Montreal Canadiens walked away very satisfied with their future but know the first few seasons will be challenging for this roster and thus far, the pre-season is supporting that belief.
Although finding a true number 1 goalie that is going to consistent for the next decade is as hard as getting a white penis into a Kardashian sister, Montreal feels that Jonathan Bernier has the potential to be an elite starting goalie and perhaps pin a fat-ass sister. The team hedged its bets by also selecting unproven young goalies Mark Visentin, Niklas Svedberg and Nathan Lieuwen plus prospect Spencer Martin. Tea Party member Tim Thomas and his white cross will serve as the back-up for this season.
Our belief is that the strength on our team in the future will be its defense anchored by Alex Pietrangelo but supported by Morgan Rielly, Ryan Murphy, Brendan Smith, Connor Carrick, Alex Petrovic, Adam Clendenning and Haydn Fleury – 5 of which are amongst Dobber’s top 35 rated prospects at that position. The team can deal from a position of strength here as they also have veterans Dan Boyle and Lubomir Visnovsky for the short term to help with transitioning the youngsters into more prominent roles.
Like any young team, generating offense will be their biggest challenge. The Habs will lean heavily on veterans Erik Cole and Pascal Dupuis for the duration of their respective contracts while investing significant resources in a slew of promising young forwards – Vladimir Tarasenko, Tyler Toffoli, Nick Bjugstad, Brock Nelson, Calle Jarnkrok, Jeremy Morin, Linden Vey, Vladislav Namestnikov and Shane Prince – plus highly touted uber-prospects Jonathan Drouin and Alexander Wennberg. As this group matures together, they should be able to find their offensive stride and hopefully become a force to be reckoned with. Fillers such as Ryan Malone and Andy Miele are keeping the seats warm until the kids oust them.
Patience will be key for the first few seasons as the potential is present but expectations in a strong hockey market are high. Regardless we are happy with the direction of our team and wish all other GMs well as we embark on the inaugural season of the OGSHL.
