After winning the Presidents Trophy last season (115 pts: 55-22-5) they were eliminated from the playoffs at the hands of Division rivals New Jersey Devils in the second round. Even after not making it past the 2nd round the Season 2 was a success after finishing 26th in Season 1.
There has been some major changes to the franchise in the offseason as the Penguins try to defend their best record in the OGSHL Regular Season.
Trade 1:
Pittsburgh acquires Landeskog & Kulikov in exchange for Perry, Myers and Bennett. This deal was made primarily for financial reasons as the Penguins didn't have to retain any of Perry's $8.25 million salary while getting substantially younger in the deal for Landeskog. Kulikov also comes in with a cheaper price tag and brings in more experience on the back end.
Trade 2:
Penguins trade Derrick Brassard for winger Milan Lucic. This will be Lucic's second stint with the club after he was acquired from the Los Angeles Kings in Season 2. The Pens already had young stars Barkov and Monahan in the fold so Brassard became expendable. They take on more salary with Lucic, but feel he has the tools in place to help the team go deeper into the playoffs.
Trade 3:
Pittsburgh send Parise, Demers and Poirier to Colorado for Steen, Baertschi and 2nd rd pick in 2017. Similar to the Perry trade the Penguins save some dollars in this deal especially with Demers increase in cap hit next season. The team have some players due hefty pay rises next offseason mainly Sean Monahan and Sasha Barkov.
Trade 4:
Penguins acquire Ryan Murray, Zach Werenski and Rick Nash in exchange for John Carlson and Gustav Nyquist. The Penguins take on a huge cap hit in Rick Nash, but the team realizes that although Carlson was locked up for another 3 seasons his asking price on his next contract would be just as much or more then the $7.8 Nash is currently receiving. In return for Carlson the Pens get two young defensemen with very high ceiling.
