Beginning This Year
Following Year Draft Picks Open Up At Trade Deadline - Starting this season, draft picks for the following year will open up 1 month before the trade deadline. For example, 2019 draft picks will be eligible to be traded 1 month prior to the deadline versus only being available in the off-season. This gives teams more flexibility in making trades and should create more action at the trade deadline. This also ensures that these picks will be available later in the year versus right away.
Beginning Next Off-Season 2018
You can retain salary on 2 year deals - Beginning NEXT off-season we will allow teams to retain salary on 2 year deals within 1 month of the trade deadline, similar to the draft pick rule beginning this year. This allows teams who may end up realizing they either can't win the cup, want to rebuild or are going to miss the playoffs some extra assets to create trades. This also allows competing teams to stock up for the playoffs at a discounted salary. We are only allowing the ability to retain on 2 year deals within the 1 month of the trade deadline because this will prevent teams from putting themselves in danger to future GMs who may take over. We find that this will give a good balance to the league and make it more realistic. Keep in mind that this will not be taking effect until NEXT year.
Max Salary Cap Retention increased to 20% of the cap, no player limit - Right now the current rule is that a team may only retain up to 10 million, or a max of 3 contracts. We will be abolishing this rule starting NEXT season. What this means is that teams can retain salary on any amount of players, as long as their max retained cap hit is 20% of the salary. For example next seasons salary cap will be 75 million. This means that a team can retain a max of $15 million. This will be a nice addition to go along with the ability to retain salaries on 2 year deals at the trade deadline. However, this rule takes effect as soon as the off-season begins. This means that you can retain 20% of salary immediately without waiting for the trade deadline window to open up.
We believe that these rules will be great additions to our league and should help boost activity around the deadline, while also making the overall league more enjoyable and realistic. If anyone has any questions or concerns feel free to post below.
We will be updating the rulebook sometime this week with the above changes.
