GM Joe Brodsky and the Florida Panthers surprised the OGSHL community today by performing two huge trades that greatly affect the make up of their franchise.
Florida Welcomes Yakupov With Open Arms
The Panthers saw forward project Beau Bennett shipped out for former #1 overall pick Nail Yakupov. The Panthers feel as if this can possibly be a monumental steal if Yakupov can rekindle himself and become worthy of the #1 overall pick that was used on him in 2012 by the Edmonton Oilers. Looking at it from a production point in the NHL this year, Beau Bennett put up 12 points in only 49 games this season while Yakupov posted 33 points in 81 games. The Panthers feel much safer acquiring Yakupov due to Bennett's injury history. However, Bennett may be given the chance to finally play alongside Crosby which can reap big rewards, but there is also a rumor that the Penguins may be looking to deal him this off-season. All in all, the Panthers are extremely pleased to land Yakupov and hope that he can join the plethora of young stars shaping up here.
So Long Tyler Myers, Hello Curtis Lazar and The 6th Pick
The second trade that the Panthers GM Joe Brodsky made was shipping out Tyler Myers and their 2016 2nd round pick for Curtis Lazar and the 6th pick in this years upcoming draft only 1 month away. The Panthers organization had high hopes for Myers as Myers finally showed his skills in full form once being shipped out from Buffalo to Winnipeg posting 15 points in 22 games with the Jets this year in the NHL. Myers looks as though he is well on his way to posting 45+ points once again, not to mention his 6'8 freak stature.
However, when Curtis Lazar and the 6th pick became available it was simply a no brainer for the Panthers. The Panthers are now able to add Lazar to a deep pool of young potential star forwards along with the 6th overall pick in such a deep draft that can certainly help the Panthers. What is so great about acquiring the 6th pick is the fact that this gives the Panthers back to back picks at #5 and 6, not to mention they have also have the 2nd, 18th and the 29th or 30th pick depending if the Dallas Stars win the cup. This gives the Panthers a total of 5 1st round picks in such a deep draft that this certainly makes them a soon to be force in a few seasons.
There isn't much more for the Panthers to do but wait until the draft so that they can put names to these picks and look to the future as it sure does look bright in Florida. Who knows, maybe the Panthers aren't quite done dealing yet and rumor has it the 6th pick, 18th pick and Dallas' pick may all be on the shopping block. It will definitely be an interesting off-season for GM Joe Brodsky that is for sure.
