2015-2016 Ratings Preview!

Dallas Stars and myself bring great news to you guys as we created our own sim ratings! Unfortunately, SIMHL will not be coming out with ratings this year which are the ratings we use here and have used in other leagues. This is when we decided to take on the task ourselves and create our own ratings that we matched to be very similar to the SIMHL but with a few tweaks. The first tweak some of you may notice will be that more of a range in some categories are being used such as Scoring for example, we started at 99 with Ovechkin and worked our way down. The way we decided to calculate scoring was by taking in goals/shots/shooting % etc. Players who scored 25-30 goals this season were given a scoring rating in the range of 80-85 for example and fluctuated based upon other factors. These ratings are very similar to SIMHL overall wise, just a tad higher. However it is all balanced out as defenseman saw a raise in their actual defensive ratings, goalies saw a raise in their actual goaltending overalls. Keep in mind just because a player such as Bouwmeester is rated "oddly high" he most likely will not perform as well in the sim as a player lower rated than him but who has higher passing, scoring, or skating factor. The overalls get impacted by experience and leadership which do not greatly affect their performance in the sim other than beefing up their rating.

Keep in mind these ratings are not yet final as we are open to some suggestions, however we believe that the ratings are all but done and we are looking forward to hearing your feedback!

We added a cool feature tab that is titled Comparison. It compares the SIMHL ratings that we are currently using to the ones that we created in each category for each position. Keep in mind where it says 70+ it is counting those in the 80 range as well. So for example you wouldn't count 140 forwards with 70+ passing and then add 52 forwards with 80+ passing, they are both counted in the 70+ already.

Hmmm, comparison thing is good but brings up one thing I quickly noticed. Having more D with higher passing/scoring ratings is (imo) a bad idea. They tend to score too much usually in sim leagues so increasing those ratings doesn't seem to make sense to me.

Otherwise, without going over individual players the ratings seem nice. Good work.

This is why we raised goalies a bit and increased the DF ratings of all players. We are going to test it tonight to make sure everything looks good!

Now that the ratings have been uploaded and it is far easier to check them out I do have once fairly big thing I noticed, and that is that players who played a low amount of games seem to have been given fairly high ratings for what they attributed to the NHL level.

Take my team for example. Harrington played 10 games in the NHL was a -10 and has a 74 defence ratings only 1 behind someone like Klingberg who played 65 and was a plus. Marchenko played 13 and has a 70 df and Helgeson played 22 and is at 72.

Was it intended for these to be so high or? Their endurence/durability ratings are not that low compared to those who played more games meaning they won't loose too much effectiveness there either so was just wondering because it seems like defenders who didn't play much still got rated like they did in checking and defence areas.

edit: I mean it isn't a crazy big deal or anything, but it does mean teams can slot people in as #5/#6 d men where in most cases they wouldn't be able to without losing a lot more then it is worthwhile.

DF ratings go off a lot more than +/-, we took in Giveaway/Takeaways, blocked shots, corsi%, Dzone starts, and more advanced stats. It didn't however take in how little games a player played so we will look into that. Endurance Durability is a decent rating because even though they only played 10-25 NHL games, it doesn't mean they were injured and may have played the rest of the season in AHL.
