As the OGSHL preseason begins, the Oilers beat writer had a chance to sit down with the new man in charge, Chris Mitchell for some discussions regarding the team.
Bill Skinner: "Chris, you took control over this team after 30 rounds had been completed in the draft. You were only allowed to make 10 of your own selections. How happy are you with the team the way it sits right now?"
Chris: "Well Bill, to be honest, its an ok team. I mean no disrespect to any of our players, or to the former person in charge of this team. However, there are many things that I would have done differently, but now it is up to me to make those changes if I can and hopefully produce a solid team in the very near future."
Bill Skinner: "Do you see any trades being made in the near future?"
Chris: "Im currently in talks with a few other GM's at the moment, however nothing has been completed yet. Let me be clear in saying that we have some good players on this team, but there is plenty of room for improvement. Im not afraid to spend money to put a team on the ice that our fans want to come see. It has been a long time since the fans here in Edmonton had a team with a chance at a championship, and Im looking to deliver that to them."
Bill Skinner: "Is this season a championship season for the Oilers?"
Chris: "Honestly, I dont think so. I mean, you look around the league and there are some teams that are going to be really tough to beat. Granted, some things look great on paper, but then they dont work out on the ice. Its a long season, so anything can happen. We are a good team, but we arent at the level of some other teams around the league yet. We will get there. It will take some time, and it will take some moves, but I do believe it can be done. I have pieces in which to build around and that is what Im going to do."
Bill Skinner: "Chris, thanks for your time and I will check in with you again soon."
Chris: "Thanks Bill. Always a pleasure speaking with you."
