After a dismal 26th overall finish in Season 1 the Penguins are hoping that the deadline deals made last season will be big dividends in Season 2. However, it was a rocky start to the season when the Pens went 2-3-0 in the first 5 games. Furthermore the top line of Parise, Stepan and Perry combined for a whopping 3 points in those first 6 games. Pavelec started all 5 of the games and recorded a 0.887 SV% and 3.54 GAA. Not what the Penguins expected when they traded Sam Bennett for him.
The team decided to have a closed door meeting among the players after their 3 consecutive loss. Team Captain Zach Parise called out himself and the top line for not leading by example, and also the poor defense of Bogosian, Myers, Brodie and Carlson. The players left the dressing room that night with the heads bowed in shame.
During the next practice the tension was high and the caliber of hockey intensified. They worked on Special Teams, Faceoffs and break outs.... everything the team was suffering in during the start of the season, and it did indeed paid Dividends.
Since then the team has gone 6-1-1 and Parise (12), Stepan (6), Perry (9) have combined for a total of 27 points (Stepan was moved from the top line midway through the 8 game span).
Pavelec had a 0.887 SV% and 2.54GAA during that stretch, while backup netminder Markstrom (Jackob) had 0.926 SV% and a 1.79GAA. The play of Markstrom has really pushed Pavelec to play better in order to maintain his starting goaltender status.
Notes:
Alex Galchenyuk and Gustav Nyquist have both been the teams most consistent players with both players recording 12 points thus far.
Defenseman Tyler Myers has 12 points, John Carlson has 10 points while TJ Brodie has 9.
Pittsburgh has 7th best PP (26.92%) but 4th worst PK (72.22%)
The Penguins (8-4-1) currently sit 1st in the Eastern Conference, 1st in the Metro Division and 3rd overall.
