Bill Skinner here in Edmonton with some breaking news regarding the direction of the team.
Bill Skinner: "Chris, you just had a conference call with all the players in the organization, including the minor leagues. Since I was a part of this, I already know what is going on, but for the rest of the league, how about making it official?"
Chris Mitchell: "Sure Bill, and thanks for coming on such short notice tonight. As everyone knows, I went out and made a huge trade before the season started, and attempted to go "all in" this season. We had a rough start to the pre-season, made some adjustments, and things got a little better. Now, here we are 16 games in, and this team is just not living up to what I expected. I know that I had said a lot would be known around the 20-30 game mark, but the time has come to decide on the fate of the team. Obviously, changes need to be made, and that time has come. The Edmonton Oilers franchise is officially going into a rebuild phase. With the amount of money invested in contracts for this team, I have decided to rebuild the franchise, and start over. This is not an easy decision to make, and I know it is one that some fans will not approve of, however, I think the time has come. As of this press release, the Oilers are going to be rebuilding."
Bill Skinner: "Chris, that is obviously a huge task, and a lengthy one. With your decision being made now, can you tell us who, if any of the players on the current roster will be staying?"
Chris Mitchell: "I have personally contacted each and every player on the team both here in Edmonton, as well as in the minor leagues. I have told them what I am doing, and have also asked if they wanted to be a part of it moving forward. At this time, there are 7 players who have expressed a desire to stay with the team, and help with the rebuild. Some of these players that have stated they want to stay will be up for new contracts at the end of the season, and will be given those contracts. As of right now, the following 3 players will remain with the team, if they choose, to help with this process.
They are as follows: Calvin de Haan - D, David Desharnais - F, and Chris Kreider - F.
As I said before, some of those players are due new contracts at the end of the season, and they will be given those contracts without hesitation. The rest of our players, whether on the pro roster, or down in the minors, are now officially available for trade discussions. All available players have waived any no trade clause they may have had, and are open to moving to other teams."
Bill Skinner: "Well Chris, it seems as if you will probably be a busy man here for some time, and I wish you all the best in this major task. Please keep in touch when you have anything to announce."
Chris Mitchell: "Thanks Bill for your time. I will be in touch."
There you have it. This was mentioned before the start of the regular season, and now it is official. The Oilers are in rebuild mode. Reporting live from Edmonton, this is Bill Skinner.
